My mom is not crafty. Her mom was an amazing seamstress, and made her rip out a zipper twelve times when she was in junior high home ec. I'm afraid that turned her off to sewing forever!

My mom was always there to help me when I needed help with my sewing projects... She wasn't really sewing when I was young so she didn't thaught me that..

She was always changing something in the house : the color of a wall, a table, a lamp... there was always something changing and I loved that :)

Back before I had my own sewing machine, I used to use my mom's sometimes (I started out hand-sewing) and for whatever reason it completely hated me - I'd use it and get nothing but a snarl of thread on the back, but then she'd use it - making no adjustments - and it would work beautifully. So sometimes I'd let that be a reason for her to finish my projects. (But MOM, my friend's baby is due NEXT WEEK and I have to get it quilted! It just won't work for me...)

My mom hates sewing, and she would make fun of me for the rest of my life if she knew "crafting" was a word I used regularly. But that's certainly not to say she didn't make stuff. She just made it in the kitchen. She was a caterer, and taught me to cook. My favorite is when she asks me to come "help" her, but what she really means is sit there and keep her company.

My fondest memory with my mom crafting is when she helped me make my very first quilt 11 years ago. It was for my niece. She helped me every stitch of the way and at the end of the day it was really simple and my niece loved it to death (holes straight through all 3 layers). I was immediately hooked and never looked back!

My mom was not a sewer, but she was a photographer (including her own darkroom) and a leather worker. These were great activities to do together and I really wish I still had my leather pocketbook with the funky 70s mushrooms on the front flap :-) We also used to do a craft called copper enamalling where you sprinkled ground glass particles on a copper shape and heated them to ungodly temperatures in a tiny little tabletop kiln (really!), removed the glowing shapes with molten glass with a little metal spatula and placed them to cool on an ASBESTOS pad. It is amazing that I survived to adulthood, but I had a great time!!

My mother taught me to embroider and I started with pre-printed pillowcases at the age of 8. My grandmother taught me to sew and the first project was an apron for my mother. It was gingham and we used the squares to cross stitch a design on the hem. I believe I was 10.

My mum died nearly two years ago. I still think of her every day. She could do anything crafty. And I was the one of her 4 girls who "crafted" the most. She taught me to sew knit, crotchet, spin, weave, and make paper. We came to quilting at around the same time. My favourite memories are around shared fabric. The phone calls before I visited where she would say "have you got any pink scraps? " and I would bring over a bag of goodies for her to rummage through before checking out her stash for any treasures for my own projects. I loved that we both had quilts which had the same fabric in them but were completely different. I miss you mum.

My mom and grandmother always let me cut and sew up their scraps and use their sewing machines even when I was very young. My fondest memory is when my mother gave me my grandmother's sewing machine to have as my first sewing machine. She also gave me my grandmother's sewing box which was full of so much of her history. When I opened the sewing box I could smell her house and I was instantly taken back to my childhood. I love that sewing machine because I know that is what my grandmother sewed with and I have made many quilts on it. When I use it I feel like she is so proud of me and watching over me. I can't bring myself to use any of her notions because I want to preserve that sewing box and all of those memories.
