Special Giveaway: A Copy of Sew Pretty for Little Girls by Alice Caroline!

So what to do on this beautiful California afternoon? Perhaps it is finally time to take a look at this adorable book by Alice Caroline titled Sew Pretty for Little Girls. Our whole business began because our fearless leader was trying to find modern prints for her boys. We've come a long way since then and it's quite fitting that we keep putting our kids first as we venture on to new and great things. This week we had the privilege of being able to review Alice Caroline's book, which was written for the little girls in our lives. As crafters, we have a special ability to pass our skills and down to the next generation. This book is a great way in which to do just that!

Now, before getting started, I must admit one thing: I'm no mother and I have no children. However, I do have 6 nieces and nephews that are all below the age of 5. I know right? I took a moment from my busy college life to take a second to review this book and think about my nieces (Soph, Stella, and Rashel) and consider how much they would love to get their little hands on some of the projects featured in this adorable book.

From the very beginning, the book oozes inspiration. I know some of us sometimes like to overlook the introduction or preface of a book, but I urge you not to pass up the introduction to this book. Just from reading it I felt a sudden urge to actually sew the quilt I've been putting off for months. Alice encourages her readers to find inspiration in other's work and not be afraid to experiment. So have at it girlies!

In some books, I've noticed that some authors like to tell us how to make an item, but fail to give us a list of the equipment and tools we'll need. Not in this book! Right at the beginning, Alice gives us a complete list of all the tools used in creating her projects. Thanks so much! Finally!

The instructions are simple and easy to follow with cute little illustrations with plenty of tips and recommendations. Tips like how to scale down a quilt or like the one pictured below.
I just know that kids who can sew their way through this book, will feel comfortable and proficient in their sewing skills to follow lots of other patterns too!

Isn't this pillow just the cutest? Maybe I'll have my niece make me one :)

But wait, it gets even better...

For those of you who are super interested...and that should be the majority of you :), the projects include making a quilt, pillows, dresses, curtains, purse, doll, and so much more!

I hope that I have been able to peak your interest in this adorable little book. It's full of cute projects for your little one and includes nifty templates and a technique section showing the proper way to sew.

If you are interested in purchasing the book or the eBook, you can click on the links below to get them! Otherwise, please enter into our giveaway for a chance to win a free PDF eBook!

Tutorial & Free PDF Template | Rocket Cushion | by The Crafty Kitty

Welcome back Stephanie, of The Crafty Kitty, with a simple and adorable way to add a little "rocket power" to your children's bedroom, or reading nook!  This tutorial includes a Free PDF template for the rocket applique, and Stephanie has great tips on how to get a professional look with your appliques.  Find the Circa 52 fabric collection at Fabricworm here. Check it out!

The combination of the space print from the circa 52 range and the embroidered appliqué sewn from mod basics organic solids, will be an 'out of this world' addition to any space fanatic's bedroom!

Supplies

Preparation

  • Cut out one, 16" square from Circa 52 Space
  • Cut out one 16" by 12" rectangle from Circa 52 Space
  • Cut out one 16" x 6" rectangle from Circa 52 Space

Instructions

Sewing the back of the cushion

Step 1
Fold the raw edges of the envelope back under by 1/4" press, fold under another 1/4", press and top stitch.

Step 2
Overlap the edges by 1.5" and baste the side edges in place

Creating the applique

Step 1
Trace rocket and flame onto the backing paper for double sided interfacing and iron the rocket shape onto the teal fabric and the flame onto the tomato fabric. Cut out.

Step 2
Trace smaller set of rocket and flame onto the backing paper for double sided interfacing and iron onto back of wadding. Cut out.

Step 3
Remove backing paper from the interfacing attached to the flame and iron onto the wadding, with the wadding centred. Remove backing paper from wadding and iron flame into position on cushion front.

Step 4
Use satin stitch to outline flame and freehand quilt to add detail.

Step 5
Remove backing paper from the interfacing attached to the rocket and iron onto the wadding, with the wadding centred. Remove backing paper from wadding and iron rocket into position on cushion front.

Step 6
Use satin stitch to outline rocket  and add the detail. Add backs of snaps to rocket as marked on pattern by small grey circles.

Optional: embroider over some of the star shapes for extra detail!!

Finishing the cushion

Step 1
Place the front and back, right sides facing and sew all around the perimeter. I like to overlock the seam to give a neat finish to the inside of the cushion.

Step 2
Turn cushion right side out and press.

Thanks for the beautiful tutorial Stephanie!  WE love this rocket pillow and can't wait to make one for ourselves!
