Toddler Bedding Tutorial | by The Crafty Kitty | feat. Marine Too

Oh we are way thrilled to kick off June by sharing a lovely tutorial with you from Stephanie of The Crafty Kitty.   Stephanie used the Marine Too collection by Dan Stiles to create this utterly adorable toddler bedding set.  So. Cute.  Keep reading for the full tutorial! 

In this toddler bedding tutorial, I am going to show you how to make a fitted knit sheet, pillowcase and a quilt cover, using these wonderful bright prints from the Marine Too Organic Fabric Collection by Dan Stiles for Birch Fabrics! It features wave panels and half square triangle fish applique.

The toddler bedding tutorial is sized for the IKEA Kritter Toddler Bed Frame, which fits a mattress 27.6" x 63"; a standard UK single duvet measuring 53" x 79" and a standard UK pillow measuring 29" x 19".

Supplies

Pillowcase

Step 1

Cut 1 rectangle measuring 48cm long by 95cm wide and 1 rectangle measuring 19" x 31.5" from Turtle Love.

Step 2

Fold under 1/2" along the RIGHT hand edge of the larger rectangle, press, fold under another 1/2"†(to enclose the raw edge) and press again. Top stitch.

Step 3

Fold Under 6" of the RIGHT hand edge of the large rectangle,press to right side.

Step 4

Fold under 1/2"†along the LEFT hand edge of the smaller rectangle, press, fold under another 1/2"†(to enclose the raw edge) and press again. Top stitch

Step 5

Place the two rectangles of fabric, right sides together, with folded over part of large rectangle on top of the smaller rectangle and pin in place.

Step 6

Sew a continuous seam (1/2"†seam allowance) along the 3 unfinished edges. Use an overlock stitch to finish the raw edges.

Step 7

Turn right sides out, press and insert pillow.

Fitted Sheet

Step 1

Cut rectangle of waves and whales knit measuring 42" wide by 180cm 70" long. from each corner cut out a 9" square.

Step 2

Sew corners, right sides together using overlock stitch, tricot stitch or narrow zig zag.

Step 3

Pin elastic in several places to the raw edge. Sew elastic to raw edge, using overlock stitch or elastic zig zag stitch, stretching out elastic as you go.

Quilt cover

Step 1

for the back of the duvet cover, cut 1 rectangle measuring 43.5" x 71" from Whale Love; 2 rectangles measuring 43.5"†x 4" and 2 rectangles measuring 8" x 79" from Mod basics tomato.

Step 2

sew the 2 smaller rectangles of mod basics tomato to the top and bottom of the whale love rectangle and then sew the 2 thin, long rectangles of mod basics tomato to each of the sides of the whale love rectangle. Overlock seams, press and set aside.

Step 3

Cut rectangles measuring 43.5"†x 14" from: wave patch, anchors away, sea faring, marine too and mod basics white. making sure to leave 1" gap between the highest and lowest waves on wave patch, so you should have 3 full patches high.

Step 4

Cut 2 rectangles measuring 8" x 79" and 2 rectangles measuring 43.5" x 8" from mod basics orange.

To make the fish applique strips, cut out 3 x 6" squares from: mod basics tomato, mod basics solid teal, urchin forest sunset, urchin forest daylight.

Cut each square in half to create half square triangles.

Press under 1/2" seam allowance, trim excess and topstitch in place referencing photo below.

Step 6

Trim the bottom of the wave patch to leave a 1" wave border. Use this to cut the bottom edge of one of the rectangles of mod basics tomato, the top edge of the other rectangle of mod basics tomato, two rectangles of mod basics white and the bottom edges of anchors away and marine too.

Step 7

Add a line of stay stitching just under 1" away from the wave edges, overlock raw edge. Clip the curves and press under.

Step 8

Overlock the top edges of the rectangles of wave patch, mod basics white, anchors away, marine too and sea faring.

Step 9

Starting from the top, lay the mod basics tomato rectangle on top of the wave patch rectangle, lining up with the wave pattern, with minimum 1" overlap. Top stitch in place, close to the wave edge.

Step 10

Continue to layer and top stitch the strips in the following order: mod basics white/fish applique; anchors away; seafaring; mod basics white/fish applique. Finishing by layering the final mod basics tomato rectangle ON TOP of the marine too strip.

Step 11

Sew the two long strips of mod basics tomato to the two long edges of the pieced front and overlock the seam. Press towards the outer edge.

Step 12

On the bottom edges of the front and back fold under 1/4" and then a further 1/4", press and top stitch.

Step 13

Place the front and back of duvet cover, right sides together. 8" from the right hand side sew in fron the bottom edge at an angle, turn and then sew all the way around the duvet cover until you get back to the bottom of the duvet cover, sew along 8" and then turn and sew back to the bottom edge.

Step 14

Overlock remaining raw edges and then turn and press.

Step 15

You can either leave the opening as is, or you can add button holes/buttons or press snaps.

Variations

For a really simple look, you could create the front of the quilt cover by repeating the instructions for the back of the cover, showcasing a different print! To make a more traditional quilt, follow the steps for the quilt cover until the end of Step 11. Put the two sides of the quilt right sides together. Add a layer of batting on top and sew all the way around leaving a gap for turning. Turn right sides out and sew the gap shut. Quilt as desired.
